When choosing a material for your swimming pool surround or decking there are many different options available, both manmade and from natural resources.
There are several factors to consider including durability, maintenance and safety as well as how cool it is on your feet.
The area surrounding your pool (the French refer to this as the ‘plage de piscine’) is as important as the swimming pool itself. A well designed and properly laid surface will add real aesthetic quality to your home and provide a safe environment for you and your family to enjoy swimming, relaxing and lounging by the pool.
There are numerous types of materials to choose from, below are just three:
????♀️ Natural Stone: This has sufficient texture to make it slip resistant and is good for landscaping and enhancing architectural features. It also comes in many different shapes and sizes. Travertine tiles are popular and very stylish, with limestone, granite and quartzite other good choices.
????♀️ Concrete: Possibly, the easiest to maintain of the surfaces, concrete gives a clean, minimalist feel that can provide a contemporary look as well as being comfortable to walk on when it is hot. Be careful though to ensure that the finish has anti-slip features.
????♀️ Wood: This can similarly provide a fresh, natural look and works well with both pools and hot tubs/spas. There is a wide range of designs and it is an affordable option for many budgets. However, wood will require more maintenance to prolong its life and is less durable long-term.
Of course, you can also consider numerous other options including artificial grass, marble, brick, pavers and other composite materials. The sky’s the limit!
